Welcome to the website of Scott Beckstead,
Attorney at Law. A practicing lawyer since 1991, Scott practices on the
central Oregon coast in the small town of Waldport, where he also serves
as the Mayor. Although his practice is varied and diverse, he has
developed a special expertise in the field of animal law, one of the
fastest growing subjects in American jurisprudence.
Scott advocates for animals in court and in the
political arena. He has litigated, negotiated, campaigned, written and
lobbied on almost every important animal welfare issue of our time. He has
served as President of the Central Coast Humane Society and is a director
of Humane Oregon, a statewide political action committee formed to advance
pro-animal legislation and defeat anti-animal candidates. Scott
co-authored the first edition of Animal Law, the first casebook
ever written on the subject. This book is being used in law schools across
the nation to prepare the next generation of lawyers, judges and
legislators to advance the cause of animal welfare. You can learn more
about Animal Law by reviewing our Animal Law page.
Animals aren’t the only ones who benefit from
Scott’s advocacy. He has advised and represented hundreds of people and
businesses in a broad variety of legal matters. Experienced in civil
litigation, trials and appeals, Scott handles personal injury and wrongful
death lawsuits, business, real estate and contract disputes, and
parent/child cases. He advises people on estate planning and handles
estate probates, guardianships, and conservatorships. He helps people form
businesses and advises them on how to manage their enterprises to avoid
exposure to liability. Check out the Law Practice page to learn
more about the different areas of Scott’s practice.
